Best feed supplements for senior horses?
My 22-year-old Quarter Horse has been losing weight despite regular dental care. His teeth are in good condition for his age according to our vet, but he's still dropping weight gradually. He's on good quality hay and senior feed, but I feel like he needs something more.
He's still quite active and alert, but I've noticed he has less energy than he did a year ago. I'm considering adding a supplement to his diet, but there are so many options out there.
Has anyone had success with specific supplements for senior horses with weight maintenance issues? I'm particularly interested in hearing about supplements that have helped with overall condition, not just weight gain.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've had great success with adding flax seed oil to my 24-year-old mare's diet. It's rich in omega-3 fatty acids which help with inflammation and overall condition. I noticed a difference within about 3 weeks - her coat looked better and she started to maintain weight more easily.
Have you tried beet pulp? It's been a game-changer for my senior gelding. I soak it before feeding, and it provides good fiber and calories without being too 'hot'. I combine it with his senior feed and he's maintained his weight well through the seasons.
I second the beet pulp recommendation. Also, have you had your hay analyzed? Sometimes what looks like good quality hay might be lacking in certain nutrients. A complete senior feed with added fat can help too. My 26-year-old does well on Triple Crown Senior.
